When repairing and restoring a classic Ford Mustang, the small details matter. Whether it's the engine, suspension, body, or interior, screws, nuts, and other fasteners must match the dimensions, strength, and design for their specific application.
In this category, you will find inch-sized screws, nuts, washers, and other fasteners for Ford Mustang models from 1964 to 1973.
Classic American vehicles predominantly use inch-sized screws and nuts. Unlike metric screws, thread diameters are given in inches and thread pitches in threads per inch (TPI).
Two types of threads are particularly common:
UNC (Unified National Coarse): inch coarse thread, for example, 1/4"-20 or 5/16"-18.
UNF (Unified National Fine): inch fine thread, for example, 1/4"-28 or 5/16"-24.
Even if two screws have the same diameter, they are not interchangeable if the thread pitch is different.
Using screws with the wrong thread can damage the threads. Therefore, before ordering, always check the diameter, thread pitch, and required screw length.
In an authentic restoration, not only the dimensions of a screw matter. The head shape, surface coating, washers, and nut design can vary depending on the model year and installation location.
Especially in the body, engine compartment, and interior, special fasteners were often used from the factory, which differ from ordinary hardware store screws.
With the right fasteners, the individual assemblies can be mounted professionally and restored as close as possible to the vehicle's original appearance.
During the maintenance and repair of your Mustang, different screws and nuts are needed in many places.
This includes fasteners for the engine and attachments, suspension, steering, body, and interior.
In addition to classic hex screws, depending on the installation location, special screws, nuts, washers, and other fastening elements are used.
Especially for safety-related components such as suspension, steering, and braking systems, screws and nuts must meet the manufacturer's specifications in terms of strength, dimensions, and design.
When selecting the right screw, you should not only pay attention to the thread diameter.
Important factors include thread pitch, screw length, head shape, strength class, and intended application.
The length of a screw is often measured incorrectly: For most hex screws, the length is given from the bearing surface under the screw head to the end of the screw. For countersunk screws, the total length including the head is usually measured.
If you want to replace an existing screw, it is advisable to measure it accurately and determine the thread size.
For vehicles that have already been restored or technically modified, it should also be checked whether the existing fasteners still match the original design.
Are you unsure which screw or nut you need for your Mustang?
Especially with classic Ford Mustangs, there are numerous different fasteners that sometimes differ only in small details.
We are happy to help you select the right fasteners for your Ford Mustang 1964–1973.
